The Black Sage Femme Project

The Black Sage Femme Project is a multidisciplinary archival, oral history, and art initiative that maps and honors the spiritual and clinical traditions of Black birthworkers across Louisiana. Rooted in Southern Black cosmologies and healing traditions, the project centers the legacy of our Black Sage Femmes--the women who birthed, healed, and protected our communities through centuries of systemic erasure and cultural violence.

Archival Research: Investigating parish and plantation records, midwife registries, and historical medical logs to document the names, practices, and resistance of Black birthworkers.

Oral Histories: Interviewing 16 Black midwives and birthworkers across Louisiana to capture lived wisdom and generational memory. Collecting oral histories about Black Sage Femmes from community members across Louisiana.

The Black Sage Femme Map: An interactive digital map tracing birthwork lineages, sacred geography, and the sociopolitical displacement of Black midwifery communities.

Altar Installations: Conference and community-based sacred art displays featuring ritual plants, ancestral portraits, and a QR code for public story submissions

Curriculum & Dialogue Toolkit: A liberatory educational resource co-created with community partners to guide midwifery students, doulas, and healthcare providers in culturally rooted care.
